Finding storm-hit blocks in Minneapolis from roofing permits

12-month counts cover 2025-10-01 to 2026-09-30 · data as of 2026-10-15

Short answer: After hail or wind, homeowners file insurance claims and roofers pull permits. A sudden cluster of roofing permits in one neighborhood is a public sign that a block was hit. Watching permits weekly shows you where, so you can mail and knock nearby homes that haven't signed yet.

1. Know the normal season first

Winter is quiet; spring through fall is busy. A spike only matters against this baseline. See roofing permits by month.

2. Look for one neighborhood pulling ahead

Citywide there were 2,322 roofing permits in 12 months. Waite Park had 213 of them, the most of any neighborhood, and 152 of those 213 were issued Jul–Sep 2026. That's about 7 in 10 of its year in three months, and about 18% of all Minneapolis roofing permits in that quarter (152 of 856).

The permit data alone doesn't tell you why. It could be storm claims, a few active crews canvassing, or an aging housing stock. Check the cause before you write "hail damage" on a mailer (step 3). See Waite Park permits.

3. Confirm a storm with public reports

  • NWS Twin Cities storm reports (weather.gov/mpx/stormreports): latest hail and wind reports for the area.
  • NOAA Storm Prediction Center daily reports (spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/): hail size, time and location for any past date.
  • Match report dates and locations to when the permit cluster starts. Permits usually lag a storm by weeks while claims are settled.

Don't claim a storm in your marketing unless a report like these backs it up.

4. Work the block

  • Mail homes on the same streets as new roofing permits (no phone or email lists needed). See direct mail to permit leads.
  • Plan a door-knocking route around the cluster.
  • Watch who is pulling permits there. If one competitor is winning the area, change your offer.
  • Check local rules on door-to-door sales first. See Minneapolis exterior permit rules.

5. Check weekly, not yearly

Clusters show up fast and fade fast. The Monday email lists last week's new roofing permits with neighborhood and the homeowner's mailing address, so you see a cluster the week it starts.
